What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes significant changes in mood. People with bipolar disorder can go from feeling really "up" and happy (mania/hypomania) to feeling really "low" and depressed. There are many different bipolar disorder symptoms, and it can be difficult to diagnose. However, there are many treatment options available, and iTrust Wellness Group is here to provide help when you or a loved one may need it.

Bipolar disorder is a complex mental illness that often causes great difficulty when left untreated. Some of the most common mania symptoms include intense feelings of irritability, racing thoughts, trouble sleeping, increased energy levels, and recklessness. Depressive episodes are generally characterized by lethargy, sadness, hopelessness, and/or loss of interest in usually pleasurable and interesting activities. There are two different kinds of bipolar disorder (known as Bipolar I or Bipolar II), diagnosed based on extremity of symptoms. However, with either diagnosis, there is hope and help available.

Unfortunately, bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely, as many of the associated symptoms are not immediately apparent. However, increased research and understanding behind bipolar disorder is helping providers diagnose more quickly and accurately. iTrust Wellness Group providers spend dedicated time training to recognize signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder in order to most effectively help those who are struggling.

We can help.

Treatment Options

Fortunately, there are a number of effective treatments for bipolar disorder that can help manage symptoms and improve overall quality of life. These treatment options may include medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, and support from loved ones. From a medication standpoint, there are many different options available, such as Abilify or Seroquel, and newer medications such as Latuda, Vraylar, and Lybalvi. The effectiveness of these medications depends on the individual, so it is important to work closely with your provider to find what works best for you. iTrust Wellness Group has a wide range of providers who are all trained thoroughly in treating bipolar disorder and can help you or a loved one find remission to symptoms.

Additionally, supportive psychotherapy and reaching out to loved ones can help on your journey to feeling better. Many therapists are trained in providing coping skills and advising on how to incorporate different techniques into your daily life in order to make symptoms more manageable. Looking into your nutrition, sleep, and exercise can also benefit you as you search for improved wellness. These things, in addition to medication, can significantly improve your mental health and get you on a better path.

If you or a loved one is struggling with bipolar disorder symptoms, or even if you are just questioning your overall mental well-being, do not hesitate to reach out for help and support. Sometimes, people will wait until they feel as though they're at a "breaking point" to reach out for help, but there is no shame in reaching out if you just have questions or feel as though something might be "off". Though society will often place stigma around mental health struggles, we are here to help reduce that stigma and provide you with accessible, quality care. At iTrust Wellness Group, our compassionate providers are here to give guidance and clarity behind your symptoms, treatment, and overall wellness.
