Supplement Suggestions

 

Below is a list of supplements recommended by our providers when necessary for a treatment plan. Under each supplement includes a description of use, some potential side effects, and a link for a suggested brand. Please check with your provider to consult on exact dosages best for your treatment plan.

Chamomile Tea

 

- Overview and Use -

Chamomile is an herb. One popular form of using this herb is to make a tea.

Chamomile can help reduce anxiety and relax the body. Many people suggest drinking this tea before bed.

 

-Side Effects - 

Chamomile can cause drowsiness. If one is allergic to any plants in the daisy family, one might have an allergic reaction to Chamomile.

DHEA

- Overview and Use -

DHEA is a hormone that is naturally made by the body. DHEA works in the body to make other male and female sex hormones within the body.
DHEA can potentially slow signs of aging and improve physical performance.

- Side Effects -

The most common side effects of DHEA are generally mild and can include acne and upset stomach. Acne occurs more in women taking DHEA. Some women can have changes in menstrual cycle, abnormal hair growth, and a deeper voice after taking DHEA. Breast pain or growth can occur in men taking DHEA.  Do not use DHEA in doses higher than 50-100 mg a day or for a long period of time

GABA (500-750mg)

- Overview and Use -

GABA is a chemical that is produced in the human brain. GABA is used to treat anxiety, improve mood, reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and treat attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

 

- Side Effects - 

Some common side effects of GABA may include GI distress, headache, muscle weakness, and drowsiness.

Glycine

- Overview and Use -

Glycine is an amino acid. Glycine can help an individual attain restful sleep and may also help enhance memory.  It can additionally help treat psychosis in diagnoses such as schizophrenia. 

- Side Effects -

Glycine can cause stomach upset-ie-nausea, vomiting and possible soft tools.

Herbal Complex (for sex drive)

- Overview and Use -

This herbal complex contains both horny goat weed and maca (individually listed in later sections).

Horny goat weed is an herb. The leaves can be used to make medicine.

Horny goat weed can be used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), low sexual desire, and increase memory. 

Maca is a plant that grows in the Andes Mountains. It has been cultivated as a vegetable crop for over 3000 years.

Maca is used for increasing energy, stamina, athletic performance, and memory. Maca is also used to treat depression, sexual side effects in men/women, female hormone imbalance, menstrual problems.    

 

- Side Effects -

Horny goat weed containing phytoestrogens has been taken by mouth safely for up to 2 years. An extract of horny goat weed containing icariin has been taken by mouth safely for up to 6 months.

Long-term use of some forms of horny goat weed might cause dizziness, vomiting, dry mouth, thirst, and nosebleed. Taking large amounts of horny goat weed might cause spasms and severe breathing problems.

Maca is safe for most people to take (up to 3 grams daily) for up to 4 months.  It has no serios side effects, but individuals with thyroid problems should be cautious of its use.

Korean red Ginseng (3g,1000mg tid)

- Overview and Use -

Korean red ginseng is a plant that grows in Asia, and its root is used as a natural remedy and supplement. 

Asian ginseng has been used to increase concentration and treat male sexual dysfunction.

- Side Effects -

Asian ginseng should not be used for more than 3 months at a time.

The most common side effect is insomnia. Less commonly, people experience menstrual problems, breast pain, increased heart rate, high or low blood pressure, headache, loss of appetite, diarrhea, itching, rash, dizziness, mood changes, or vaginal bleeding.

L methyl folate (15 mg)

- Overview and Use -

Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate. Folate is a B-vitamin naturally found in certain foods. It is needed to form normally functioning cells.

Folic acid supplements, like L methyl folate, are used to prevent or treat low folate levels.  Folate is necessary for the brain to produce the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine that effect mood.  Low folate levels can lead to certain types of mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

- Side Effects -

Folic acid usually has few side effects. If you have adverse effects from taking this product, inform your provider immediately.

L-theanine (200mg)/L-theanine Powder

 

- Overview and Use -

Theanine is an amino acid found in tea and in some mushrooms. It is structurally like another amino acid called glutamic acid. L-theanine can be used to treat anxiety and stress, depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease, and increasing focus and attention.

 

- Side Effects -

Theanine may cause mild adverse effects, such as headache or sleepiness.

Lithium Orotate

- Overview and Use -

Lithium is a natural occurring element found on earth. Lithium works with other elements, drugs, enzymes, hormones, vitamins, and growth factors in the human body in several different ways.

Lithium is used to treat bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, and eating disorders.

- Side Effects -

Lithium can cause nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, muscle weakness, fatigue, and a dazed feeling.  These unwanted side effects are commonly associated with taking prescription lithium (lithium carbonate) and not supplemental lithium (lithium orotate).

Magnesium can help an individual fall asleep and attain restful, quality sleep.  It can also help treat symptoms of restless leg syndrome. 

 

- Side Effects -

Stomach upset and diarrhea may occur. Taking this product with a meal helps to reduce these effects.

Magnesium Glycinate (400 mg)

- Overview and Use -

Magnesium is a mineral supplement used to prevent and treat low amounts of magnesium in the blood. Magnesium is very important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart.  Magnesium glycinate is a compound of magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine.  Glycine is a relaxing neurotransmitter that helps to increase the induction of calming effects of magnesium.

Magnesium glycinate can help treat sleep disturbance, anxiety, and depression.

 

- Side Effects -

Stomach upset and diarrhea may occur. Taking this product with a meal helps to reduce these effects.

Magnesium L-Threonate (2000mg)

- Overview and Use -

Magnesium is a mineral supplement used to prevent and treat low amounts of magnesium in the blood. Magnesium is very important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones, and the heart.  Magnesium L-Threonate is a compound of magnesium bound to the amino acid threonine.  This form of magnesium can uniquely cross the blood brain barrier which can elevate brain magnesium levels.  Elevating brain magnesium can increase learning capabilities, working memory, and short- and long-term memory.

Magnesium L-Threonate is useful to enhance brian health.  It is useful to decrease the cognitive deficiencies associated with aging and it may be helpful for patients struggling with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. 

 

- Side Effects -

Stomach upset, drowziness and diarrhea may occur. Taking this product with a meal helps to reduce these effects.

Melatonin 

Overview and Use

Melatonin is a hormone found in the body.  Melatonin regulates night and day cycles or sleep-wake cycles.

Melatonin is used for insomnia and improving sleep. Some people use melatonin for jet lag and people who need their sleep cycle adjusted.

Side Effects

You may experience a headache, daytime sleepiness, dizziness, stomach cramps, and irritability.

N-Acetyl cysteine (600mg)

- Overview and Use -

N-acetyl cysteine is derived form from the amino acid L-cysteine. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins in the human body.  NAC is essential to produce glutathione, which is a powerful antioxidant.  In the human body NAC is also useful in regulating the primary excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate helping to decrease feelings of restlessness.

Some research shows that N-acetyl cysteine may improve some symptoms of bipolar d/o, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, autism, difficulty with concentration, trichotillomania, substance abuse, preventing kidney and liver damage by means of detoxification, helps in the regulation of blood sugar, and numerous other medical conditions.

- Side Effects -

N-acetyl cysteine is safe for most adults. Sometimes it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea or constipation. In rare cases NAC may cause rashes, fever, headache, drowsiness, low blood pressure, and liver problems. For some, N-acetyl cysteine has an unpleasant odor that may make it hard to take.

Pregnanolone (10mg)

- Overview and Use -

Pregnenolone is a chemical that is found in the human body. It can also be synthesized in a laboratory.

Pregnenolone is used to help fight fatigue, increase energy, enhance memory, and improve mood.  It is also used to treat symptoms associated with schizophrenia.

- Side Effects -

In some people, pregnenolone can cause skin rashes, acne, hair loss, diarrhea or constipation, problems sleeping, restlessness, agitation, sweating, or tremor. It may also cause palpitations, depressed mood, both increased or decreased appetite, or muscle pain.  Pregnenolone should be taken for up to 12 weeks.

- Overview and Use -

Saffron is a plant that grows in various parts of the world. Saffron is mostly cultivated and harvested by hand.  Because of its labor-intensive requirements, it is considered one of the world's most expensive spices.

Saffron is used to treat depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and ADHD.

- Side Effects -

Some possible side effects include dry mouth, anxiety, agitation, drowsiness, low mood, sweating, nausea or vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, change in appetite, flushing, and headache. Allergic reactions can occur in some people.

Vitamin B12 (1000mcg tablet sl)

- Overview and Use -

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin, which means the body requires vitamin B12 to work properly. Vitamin B12 can be found in foods such as meat, fish, and dairy products. It can also be synthesized in a laboratory.

Vitamin B12 can boost mood, energy, concentration, mental function, and the immune system.

- Side Effects -

High doses of vitamin B12 might cause: Dizziness, headache, anxiety, nausea, and vomiting

- Overview and Use -

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D is made by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight.

Keeping Vitamin D at normal levels will help treat depression, anxiety, and seasonal affective disorder

- Side Effects -

Vitamin D at normal doses usually has no side effects.
